Regulators have repeatedly shown that the large majority of individual F&O traders in India lose money. The reason is rarely a lack of good trade ideas — it is a lack of risk management. Leverage magnifies both skill and mistakes, and without strict discipline it magnifies mistakes faster. This guide is about staying in the game.
Position sizing beats prediction
The single most important habit is sizing every position so that a loss is a small, fixed fraction of your capital — often 0.5% to 1%. Think in R-multiples: define your risk (1R) before entry, and never let one trade cost more than that. With this discipline, a losing streak is a flesh wound, not a funeral. Without it, one bad trade can undo months of work.
Prefer defined risk
Some option positions carry theoretically unlimited risk (naked selling); others cap your maximum loss by design (debit spreads, and other multi-leg structures). Especially while you are learning, favour defined-risk structures where you can see your worst case on a payoff diagram before you commit. Knowing your maximum loss in advance is what lets you size correctly and sleep at night.
Understand what leverage really means
Margin lets you control a large position with a small amount of capital. That cuts both ways: a 2% move in the underlying can be a 20%+ swing on your margin. Before every trade, translate the position back into "what does a normal daily move do to my capital?" If the answer frightens you, the position is too big.
The pre-trade checklist
- Define your riskKnow the exact rupee amount you can lose, and confirm it is a small % of capital.
- Know your maximum lossFor options, view the payoff and breakevens. Never enter a structure whose worst case you have not seen.
- Write your exitDecide your stop and your target before entry — both in price and in R.
- Check the environmentIs implied volatility high or low? Is there an event (expiry, results) that changes the risk?
- Size down when unsureWhen in doubt, trade smaller. Survival first, profit second.
